Anyone who has had breast cancer, or any kind of cancer for that matter, has a deep-seated, but mostly unvoiced, fear that the cancer will return. Elizabeth Edwards' fear came true. Although she is very positive, and she will need to be, bone metastasis is a very serious problem.

So what can we do? How do we prevent metastasis from occurring other than to keep dosing ourselves with chemicals? We need to be alert. Once we are through the initial cancer protocol and on six month or yearly check-ups, we need to control our own health care.

I have a chest x-ray annually. I get a total bone scan periodically. I check out any suspicious lumps or sores with my doctor. I see a dermatologist for a "paranoia" check semi-annually. I exercise and try to eat healthily. And yet I know that even though in my case the odds are 98% against a recurrence, it could happen.

There are no magic numbers, no set number of years past which a recurrence will not occur. So keep alert, do all you can to stay healthy, keep positive, and hope that you will be one that has only one occurence of your cancer.
